What is culture?

• Culture is the set of beliefs, customs, foods, languages, art, and celebrations shared by a group of people.
• It is passed down from parents and grandparents to children — from one generation to the next.
• Example: A family that celebrates Diwali, cooks tamales, or sings folk songs is sharing their culture.

The four parts of culture on your poster

• Food — a special dish your family makes or a food connected to your heritage.
• Language — the language(s) your family speaks at home or words you know from your heritage.
• Celebrations — a holiday, festival, or special event your family observes.
• Traditions — a repeated activity your family does together, like a game, song, or seasonal custom.

All cultures are equal

• No culture is better or more important than another.
• When we learn about different cultures, we build respect and friendship across the world.
• Our families and community are richer because many cultures come together in them.
