Mini Lesson

Every person who lives in a community is a citizen — and every citizen has the power to make that community a better place just by the choices they make each day!

What is a citizen?

  • A citizen is a person who lives in and belongs to a community, town, state, or country.
  • Citizens have rights (things they are allowed to do) and responsibilities (things they should do to help the community).
  • Example: You have the right to use the park, but you have the responsibility to keep it clean.

Responsible citizen actions at the library

  • Follow library rules and treat friends with kindness.
  • Take care of shared library supplies and books.
  • Tell a trusted adult when something is wrong.

Responsible citizen actions in the community

  • Pick up litter — even if you did not drop it.
  • Recycle paper, plastic, and cans in the right bins.
  • Be kind and respectful to all neighbors.
  • Obey traffic lights and cross at the crosswalk.

Why does responsible citizenship matter?

  • When everyone acts responsibly, the community becomes safer, cleaner, and more pleasant for all.
  • Even small acts — picking up one piece of litter or holding the door — add up to a big difference.
