Does your family do something special every year — like baking the same cookies or singing the same song? That is a tradition, and it connects you to the people you love!

What is a tradition?

  • A tradition is a custom or activity that is passed down from one generation to the next.
  • Traditions can be shared by families, communities, or whole countries.
  • Example: Sharing a big meal on Thanksgiving is a tradition many American families follow every November.

What is a festival?

  • A festival is a community celebration, often held once a year, marking an important event, season, or cultural value.
  • Festivals often include music, food, decorations, and special activities.
  • Example: The Fourth of July is a national festival with fireworks, parades, and picnics that celebrates independence.

Examples of traditions and festivals

  • Thanksgiving — families gather to give thanks and share a meal.
  • Fourth of July — celebrates the independence of the United States with fireworks.
  • Lunar New Year — celebrated by many Asian communities with parades, lanterns, and special food.
  • Diwali — the festival of lights celebrated by Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities.
