Mini Lesson
Communities are full of people who work hard every day to keep everyone safe, healthy, and happy β and they all have special roles!
Leaders make decisions for the community
- A mayor is the leader of a city or town. The mayor makes important decisions to help people.
- A principal leads a school, making sure students and teachers have what they need.
- Example: The mayor decides how the town spends money on parks and roads.
Helpers keep us safe
- A police officer helps keep the community safe by enforcing laws and helping people in trouble.
- A firefighter rushes to put out fires and helps in all kinds of emergencies.
Helpers keep us healthy and learning
- A doctor or nurse checks on our health and helps us feel better when we are sick.
- A teacher helps children learn new skills every day at school.
Leaders vs. helpers
- Leaders guide groups of people and make big decisions.
- Helpers provide a specific service that people in the community need.
Ask yourself: "Is this person making decisions for a group, or providing a specific service?"
