Mini Lesson

Looking back at how far you have come is one of the kindest and most powerful things you can do for your own learning and growth.

What does reflection mean?

  • Reflection means looking back honestly and thoughtfully at how you have changed over time.
  • A good reflection is curious — you ask what you tried and what changed — not harsh. You do not say you failed or you are bad at this.
  • Reflection is how athletes, artists, and scientists figure out what to keep doing and what to try differently.

Reflection and growth mindset

  • Growth mindset means believing that effort makes you better over time.
  • When you reflect and see real progress, you get proof that effort works — and that proof helps you keep going.
  • Even small improvements count. Going from 3 correct to 7 correct is growth worth celebrating.

How to reflect on a goal — 4 steps

  • Step 1 — Name the goal: write down the goal you set or something you have been working on this year.
  • Step 2 — Notice what changed: list two things you practiced, then describe one improvement you can actually see or measure.
  • Step 3 — Give yourself credit: acknowledge that the improvement happened because of your effort. Say it out loud — I did this.
  • Step 4 — Choose what is next: write one new goal that builds on your progress. Make it specific, realistic, and time-related.

What if my goal is not reached yet?

  • That is completely normal. Look for any progress at all — even tiny steps forward are worth noting.
  • Adjust the goal if needed: make it smaller, or break it into smaller steps.
