📘
Mini Lesson
Your breathing is a tool you carry everywhere — and learning to use it on purpose can help you feel calmer, clearer, and more in control.
What is mindfulness?
- Mindfulness means paying attention to right now — on purpose, without judging what you notice.
- When you breathe mindfully, you focus only on your breath instead of worrying thoughts.
- You do not need any equipment. Your breath is always with you.
Why does breathing help calm you down?
- Slow, deep breaths send a signal to your brain that you are safe, which slows your heart rate.
- Taking a breath gives you a short pause before you react — and that pause is where good choices happen.
- Breathing also relaxes the muscles in your shoulders, chest, and face.
Three breathing techniques to try
- Belly breathing: Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts and feel your belly rise. Breathe out through your mouth for 4 counts and feel your belly fall.
- Box breathing: Breathe in 4 counts, hold 4 counts, breathe out 4 counts, hold 4 counts. Repeat the box.
- 5-finger breathing: Spread one hand. Use a finger from your other hand to trace up each finger while breathing in, then down while breathing out.
When to use these techniques
- Before a quiz or hard task, after an argument, when you cannot sleep, or when you feel overwhelmed.
- You can also use them just to start your day feeling calm and focused.
💡
Ask yourself: "Which technique felt the most calming for me? How did my body feel before and after I tried it?"
