Mini Lesson

A calendar is a chart that organizes days, weeks, and months. Every year has 12 months and 365 days (366 in a leap year). Every week has 7 days.

The 12 months in order

  • January (1), February (2), March (3), April (4), May (5), June (6).
  • July (7), August (8), September (9), October (10), November (11), December (12).
  • Memory tip: "Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun — Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec" — say it like a chant!

Days in each month — the knuckle trick

  • Make a fist. Count across your knuckles (up = 31 days, down = 30 days or 28/29).
  • 31 days: Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec.
  • 30 days: Apr, Jun, Sep, Nov.
  • 28 or 29 days: February only.

The 7 days of the week in order

  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
  • The weekend = Saturday and Sunday.
  • Weekdays = Monday through Friday.

Reading a monthly calendar grid

  • Columns = days of the week (Sun to Sat or Mon to Sun).
  • Rows = weeks. Each number in the grid is a date.
  • To find a date: look at the column for the day and the row for the week.
  • To count days between two dates: subtract the earlier date from the later date.
