Estimate Length and Weight

Estimating means making a careful, educated guess before you measure. A good estimate uses a benchmark — a known size you already understand — to compare with.

What this lesson teaches

1Use a 12-inch ruler (1 foot) and a 30 cm ruler as length benchmarks to estimate object size
2Use 1 pound and 1 kilogram as weight benchmarks to estimate whether objects are lighter or heavier
3Choose the right unit for the size of the object — inches and pounds for everyday items, feet/meters for big things
4Compare an estimate with an actual measurement to see how close it was
