Mini Lesson

A times table is a list of all the products you get when you multiply a number by 1, 2, 3, 4... It is built from everything we have learned: equal groups, repeated addition, and skip counting.

The x2 table (skip count by 2s)

  • 1x2=2, 2x2=4, 3x2=6, 4x2=8, 5x2=10
  • All products are even. Pattern: ends in 2, 4, 6, 8, 0, 2, 4...

The x5 table (skip count by 5s)

  • 1x5=5, 2x5=10, 3x5=15, 4x5=20, 5x5=25
  • All products end in 0 or 5.

The x10 table (skip count by 10s)

  • 1x10=10, 2x10=20, 3x10=30, 4x10=40, 5x10=50
  • All products end in 0. Just add a zero after the first number.

The x3 and x4 tables

  • x3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 — skip count by 3s.
  • x4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 — skip count by 4s (or double the x2 table).

Two game strategies

  • Skip count up: For 4x3, count by 3s four times: 3, 6, 9, 12.
  • Use a known fact: 4x3 = 3x4 (commutative), so 3x4 = 12.

Vocabulary
Times table
A list of products you get when multiplying a number by 1, 2, 3, and so one.g. I practiced the 5 times table.
Product
The answer to a multiplicatione.g. The product of 3 × 4 is 12.
Skip count
To count by equal jumps, like 2s or 5se.g. I used skip counting to find 4 × 3.
Commutative property
The rule that 3 × 4 equals 4 × 3e.g. The commutative property gives me twice as many facts to know.
