Mini Lesson

Skip counting means jumping over numbers in equal steps. Instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4… you jump straight to 2, 4, 6, 8… or 5, 10, 15… or 10, 20, 30… It is repeated addition on a number line — and a shortcut to multiplication!

Skip counting by 2s

  • Add 2 each time: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
  • All the numbers are even. The ones digit cycles: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 0, 2…
  • Tip: These are your 2 times table values.

Skip counting by 5s

  • Add 5 each time: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.
  • Every number ends in 0 or 5.
  • Tip: Count on one hand — each finger is 5.

Skip counting by 10s

  • Add 10 each time: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.
  • Every number ends in 0. Only the tens digit changes.
  • Tip: These are the blue decade numbers on the hundred chart.
