Mini Lesson

A place value riddle gives you clues about the hundreds, tens, and ones digit of a mystery number. Read every clue, fill in a place value chart, and the mystery number reveals itself!

Types of clues you will see

  • "My hundreds digit is 5." — Write 5 in the hundreds column.
  • "My tens digit is 3 more than my ones digit." — Links two places together; try digits until one fits.
  • "My ones digit is even." — The ones digit must be 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
  • "I am between 400 and 500." — My hundreds digit must be 4.
  • "All my digits add up to 10." — H + T + O = 10; use the other clues to narrow it down.

Worked example

  • Clue 1: My hundreds digit is 3. → H = 3.
  • Clue 2: My tens digit is 4. → T = 4.
  • Clue 3: My ones digit is an even number less than 5. → ones ∈ {0, 2, 4}.
  • Clue 4: All three digits add up to 9. → 3 + 4 + O = 9 → O = 2.
  • Mystery number: 342.
