Identify Odd and Even Numbers

Mini Lesson

Every whole number is either even or odd — and the quickest way to find out is to look at just one digit: the ones digit!

Even numbers

  • A number is even if its ones digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
  • Even numbers can be split into two equal groups with nothing left over.
  • Examples: 4, 12, 36, 148, 720 — all end in an even digit, all are even.

Odd numbers

  • A number is odd if its ones digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
  • Odd numbers always have one left over when you try to split them equally.
  • Examples: 7, 13, 45, 231, 809 — all end in an odd digit, all are odd.

The ones digit is the only one that matters

  • It does not matter what the hundreds or tens digits are.
  • 598 ends in 8 → even. 597 ends in 7 → odd.
  • The hundreds digit 5 makes no difference — only the 8 or 7 at the end counts.

Ask yourself: "What is the ones digit? Is it in the even group (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) or the odd group (1, 3, 5, 7, 9)?"

Vocabulary
Even
A number that ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8e.g. 148 is even because it ends in 8.
Odd
A number that ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9e.g. 231 is odd because it ends in 1.
Ones digit
The last digit on the right of a numbere.g. The ones digit of 597 is 7.
Pair
Two things grouped togethere.g. Even numbers can be split into pairs with none left over.
Equal groups
