Mini Lesson

This is it — Lesson 40! The very last lesson of Grade 1 Writing. Today you are not just a learner. Today you are an author, and authors share their work with the world. Your job today is to present your storybook to an audience and take a well-earned bow!

Before you present — get ready!

  • Practice reading your book aloud at least twice before your presentation.
  • Make sure your voice is clear and big enough for everyone to hear.
  • Know your story well enough to look up at your audience sometimes.
  • Hold your book to the side so your audience can see the pictures as you read.

During your presentation

  • Start strong: say "My name is ___ and my book is called ___."
  • Read with expression — slow, clear pace, pause at punctuation, sound excited at exclamation marks.
  • Show the pictures — after each page, tilt the book toward your audience.
  • Finish with confidence — say "The End." Then say "Thank you for listening!"

After your presentation

  • Your audience may ask you one question about your book — answer in a full sentence.
  • Take a bow. You earned it!
