Mini Lesson

Some words appear so often in sentences that readers need to recognize them in an instant — without sounding out every letter. These are called sight words.

What is a sight word?

  • A sight word is a common word you see in almost every book.
  • Many sight words do not follow regular phonics rules.
  • Example: the — the letters say t-h-e but the word sounds like "thuh."

Why memorize them?

  • About half of all words you read are sight words.
  • Knowing them instantly makes reading faster and smoother.
  • It also frees your brain to focus on harder, less common words.

How to learn a sight word

  • Look at the whole word — notice its shape.
  • Say it out loud. Spell the letters aloud: t-h-e.
  • Cover it, write it, then check it.
