Objective
I can write letters neatly by starting in the right place,
using smooth strokes, and keeping my letters sitting on the line.
Materials
- Sharpened pencil
- Eraser
- Ruled paper (primary lines preferred)
Mini-lesson — Neat letters on the lines
Neat letters look calm and clean. The secret is simple:
start in the right place, move smoothly, and
land on the line.
Start points
- Some letters start at the top line.
- Some letters start at the middle line.
- Starting in the same place makes letters match.
Smooth strokes
- Go slow enough to stay in control.
- Use light pressure so lines stay smooth.
- One smooth stroke looks better than many scratchy strokes.
Sit on the line
- Most letters sit on the baseline (the bottom line).
- If a letter floats, it looks messy.
- If it drops too low, it bumps the next line.
Same size in a word
- Keep small letters in the small space.
- Keep tall letters tall — but not extra tall.
- Matching sizes makes words look clean.
Ask yourself:
"Did I start in the right place? Did I stay smooth? Did my letters sit on the line?"
