Imagine a grown-up wants to explain why the sky is blue. Instead of searching through many books, she types a question into ChatGPT and gets a clear, plain-English explanation in seconds. Let's look at exactly what happens!

Step 1 — The grown-up types a prompt

  • A prompt is the question or instruction the grown-up types into ChatGPT.
  • Example prompt: "Explain why the sky is blue in simple words for a six-year-old."
  • The more specific the prompt, the more useful the answer.

Step 2 — ChatGPT reads and processes the prompt

  • ChatGPT has been trained on a huge amount of text — books, articles, and websites.
  • It finds patterns in its training data that match the grown-up's question.
  • It does not "look things up" like a search engine — it generates an answer word by word, predicting what should come next.

Step 3 — ChatGPT writes back an answer

  • The answer appears on the screen as full sentences in plain language.
