Mini Lesson

When most people hear the word "robot," they might imagine a metal creature from a movie. But real robots look all sorts of ways — and many of them are doing helpful jobs right now, all around the world!

Robots that help at home

  • Robot vacuum — rolls across the floor, maps the room, and vacuums all by itself. You never need to push it.
  • Robot lawn mower — drives slowly across a yard cutting the grass, staying inside a boundary wire.
  • Robot pool cleaner — swims around a pool scrubbing the walls and floor clean underwater.

Robots that help people and communities

  • Delivery robot — a small wheeled robot that drives along sidewalks carrying packages or food right to your door.
  • Hospital robot — wheels medications and supplies from the pharmacy to patient rooms so nurses save time walking.
  • Warehouse robot — zips around huge storage buildings, picking boxes from shelves and bringing them to workers who pack orders.

Robots that explore dangerous places

  • Bomb-disposal robot — a wheeled or tracked robot that picks up and safely removes dangerous objects so people stay safe.
  • Underwater robot (ROV) — dives deep into the ocean to film sea creatures, check oil pipes, or fix cables far below the surface.
