Mini Lesson

Tiny living things called germs — bacteria and viruses — are all around us. They can make us sick when they get inside our bodies. Good hygiene habits stop germs from spreading and keep our bodies healthy.

Why hygiene matters

  • Germs spread through dirty hands, unwashed surfaces, and close contact with sick people.
  • Good hygiene breaks the chain of infection — it stops germs reaching our mouth, eyes, and nose.
  • Example: Washing hands before eating removes germs that could make you sick.

Key hygiene habits

  • Handwashing — wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the bathroom.
  • Teeth brushing — brush twice a day for 2 minutes to remove plaque and prevent cavities.
  • Bathing or showering — wash the body daily or regularly to remove sweat, dirt, and bacteria.
  • Nail care — keep nails short and clean; long nails trap dirt and germs.
  • Hair washing — regular hair washing removes oil, dirt, and scalp build-up.
  • Covering coughs and sneezes — use a tissue or elbow, not bare hands, to stop droplets spreading.
