Mini Lesson

Just like you live in a home that has everything you need, every animal lives in a place that gives it food, water, shelter, and space. That special place is called a habitat.

What is a habitat?

  • A habitat is the natural home of an animal — the place where it finds everything it needs to survive.
  • Every habitat gives the animal food, water, shelter, and space.
  • Example: A fish needs water to breathe, swim, and find food — so the ocean is its habitat.

Six habitats to know

  • Ocean — fish, dolphins, crabs, and whales live here. It is salty and deep.
  • Forest — deer, owls, bears, and foxes live among trees and plants.
  • Desert — camels and lizards thrive in dry, hot, sandy places.
  • Pond / river — frogs, ducks, and beavers live near fresh water.
  • Underground / burrow — moles, rabbits, and worms tunnel in the soil.
  • Nest / tree — birds build nests high up to stay safe and raise their chicks.

Why does habitat matter?

  • If an animal is taken out of its habitat, it struggles to find food and shelter.
  • Protecting habitats keeps animals healthy and alive.

Habitat

Shelter

Burrow
A hole or tunnel that an animal lives in undergrounde.g. A rabbit hides in its burrow.
Survive
