Mini Lesson

A plant is like a tiny team. Every part has its own special job, and all the parts work together to keep the plant alive and growing.

Roots — the drinker

  • Roots grow down into the soil and drink water and minerals.
  • They also hold the plant firmly in the ground so it does not fall over.
  • Example: When you pull a weed, the roots come up with it.

Stem — the highway

  • The stem carries water and minerals from the roots up to the leaves and flower.
  • It also holds the plant upright so the leaves can reach the sunlight.

Leaves — the food factory

  • Leaves catch sunlight and take in carbon dioxide from the air.
  • They use sunlight and water to make food for the whole plant.

Flower — the seed maker

  • The flower makes seeds so the plant can make new plants.
  • Not all plants have flowers — but many of the ones you know do.
