Mini Lesson

You have traveled through all five math units this year — and tomorrow is Math Fair Day! Let us look back at the most important ideas from every unit so you feel confident and ready.

Unit 1 — Numbers and Counting (L1–8)

  • Count to 100. Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
  • Place value: tens and ones (e.g., 34 = 3 tens + 4 ones).
  • Compare numbers: greater than (>), less than (<), equal to (=).
  • Order numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Unit 2 — Addition and Subtraction (L9–16)

  • Add and subtract small numbers. Use a number line to help.
  • Fact families: 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 − 3 = 4, 7 − 4 = 3.
  • Doubles: 4 + 4 = 8. Near doubles: 4 + 5 = 9 (doubles + 1).
  • Making 10: 6 + 4, 7 + 3, 8 + 2, 9 + 1.

Unit 3 — Shapes and Measurement (L17–24)

  • 2D shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon.
  • 3D shapes: sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, rectangular prism.
  • Compare: longer/shorter, taller/shorter, heavier/lighter, holds more/less.
  • Time: read clocks to the hour and half-hour. Read a calendar.

Unit 4 — Data and Money (L25–32)

  • Sort objects by color, shape, or size.
  • Tally marks and bar graphs: record and read data.
  • Coins: penny 1¢, nickel 5¢, dime 10¢, quarter 25¢.
  • Count coins, pay exact prices, make change.

Unit 5 — Problem Solving & Projects (L33–38)

  • Missing number puzzles and number patterns.
  • Word problems: spot key words, write a number sentence, solve, check.
  • Patterns in nature: repeating (same unit) and growing (adds each step).
  • Build with shapes, run a survey, design a shop poster.

💡

Ask yourself: "Which unit felt easiest? Which one do I want to practice one more time before Math Fair Day?"

Vocabulary
Place value
The value of a digit based on its position (tens, ones)e.g. 34 = 3 tens + 4 ones
Fact family
A set of related addition and subtraction facts using the same three numberse.g. 3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7−3=4, 7−4=3
Hexagon
A 2D shape with 6 sides and 6 cornerse.g. honeycomb cell
Change
The money you get back when you pay more than the pricee.g. Paid 10¢ for a 7¢ item → 3¢ change
Altogether
A key word in word problems that signals additione.g. "5 and 3 altogether" → 5 + 3
