Mini Lesson

A calendar is a tool that organizes time into days, weeks, and months. Learning to read one is a skill you use every single day!

Days of the week — 7 in order

  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
  • A week has 7 days. The week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday.
  • Weekdays are Monday–Friday. Weekend days are Saturday and Sunday.

Months of the year — 12 in order

  • January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
  • A year has 12 months. Most months have 30 or 31 days. February has 28 (or 29 in a leap year).

Reading a monthly calendar

  • The month name is at the top. The days of the week are the column headers.
  • Each numbered box is one date. Read across rows from left to right, top to bottom.
  • Yesterday is the day before today. Tomorrow is the day after today.

Calendar
A chart that shows days, weeks, and months in ordere.g. I used the calendar to find my birthday.
Week
A group of seven days from Sunday to Saturdaye.g. There are 7 days in a week.
Month
A group of about 30 or 31 days that has a namee.g. October is a month with 31 days.
Weekday
A day from Monday to Fridaye.g. Wednesday is a weekday.
Weekend
Saturday and Sunday — the days off from lessonse.g. I rest with my family on the weekend.
Date
A specific day on the calendar, with a numbere.g. The date today is the 5th.
