Understanding Time — Hour and Half-Hour

Mini Lesson

Knowing how to read a clock is one of the most useful things you can learn. Let's start with two key times — the hour and the half-hour.

Parts of an analog clock

  • A clock has a short hand (hour hand) and a long hand (minute hand).
  • The clock face is divided into 12 numbers arranged in a circle.
  • The hands move clockwise — from 12 → 1 → 2 → … → 11 → 12.

Reading the hour — o'clock

  • When the long hand points straight up to 12, it is exactly on the hour.
  • Look at the short hand — whatever number it points to is the hour.
  • Example: short hand on 3, long hand on 12 → 3:00 (three o'clock).

Reading the half-hour — thirty

  • When the long hand points straight down to 6, half an hour has passed.
  • The short hand is now halfway between two numbers — read the smaller one.
  • Example: short hand between 3 and 4, long hand on 6 → 3:30 (three thirty).

Writing digital time

  • Hours go before the colon: 3:00 or 3:30.
  • On the hour: minutes are always 00.
  • On the half-hour: minutes are always 30.

Vocabulary
Hour hand
The short hand on a clock — points to the houre.g. at 3:00, the short hand points to 3
Minute hand
The long hand on a clock — tells how many minutese.g. at :00 it points to 12; at :30 it points to 6
O'clock
Used when the time is exactly on the hour (minutes = 00)e.g. 3 o'clock is 3:00
Half-hour
Thirty minutes past the hour (minutes = 30)e.g. 3:30 is half past three
