Mini Lesson
Zero is a very special number — it means there is nothing at all in a group. It has its own place on the number line and its own important job!
Zero means none
- If you have 3 apples and eat them all, you have 0 apples left.
- Zero is written as 0 — a round shape, like an empty container.
- A dot card for zero has no dots on it at all.
Zero on the number line
- Zero comes before 1 — it is the starting point.
- It is less than every counting number: 0 < 1, 0 < 2, 0 < 5…
- When you count down: 3, 2, 1, 0 — zero is where you stop.
Zero in addition and subtraction
- Any number plus zero stays the same: 4 + 0 = 4.
- Any number minus itself equals zero: 3 − 3 = 0.

Ask yourself: "How many are left? If the answer is none, the number is zero!"
Vocabulary
Zero
The number that means none — nothing in the groupe.g. I had 3 cookies and ate them all, so I have zero cookies.
Number line
A straight line with numbers in order from left to righte.g. Zero is the first stop on the number line.
Empty
Having nothing insidee.g. My cup is empty — it holds zero water.
Less than
A smaller number when we compare two numberse.g. Zero is less than every counting number.
