Lesson 01: Counting to 100

🧮 MATH (40 Lessons)🟢 A. Numbers and Counting

← Back to Level 1 Math

Objective

I can read, say, and count numbers to 100. I can count by ones and by tens. I can use a number line and show tens and ones.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Counting by ones and tens

When we count, we say numbers in order. We can count by ones (1, 2, 3…) or by tens (10, 20, 30…).

Count forward (up)

  • Numbers get bigger.
  • On a number line, you move to the right.

Count backward (down)

  • Numbers get smaller.
  • On a number line, you move to the left.

Hundred chart tip

  • Go across = count by 1.
  • Go down = jump by 10.

Tens and ones

  • 47 means 4 tens and 7 ones.
  • 64 means 6 tens and 4 ones.

Say the numbers out loud and point carefully so you do not skip any numbers.

Guided Practice — Count on and back with real objects

Count a few small objects one by one, touching each as you say the number. Now point to a number like 20 on your chart and count forward, then backward. Take your time and repeat it once more.

  1. Count 10 objects (by ones).
  2. On your hundred chart, point to 20 and count up: 21, 22, 23…
  3. Now count back: … 23, 22, 21, 20.
  4. Try counting by tens: 10, 20, 30, 40…
  5. Use the tracing pad to write a number you practiced (like 50 or 100).

Practice 2 — Number line questions

Tap the correct tick on each number line.

Tap the tick that shows 5.

On this number line from 0 to 20, tap 10.

Tap the tick that shows 27.

Tap the tick that shows 33.

On this number line, tap the tick for 60.

Tap the number that is 10 more than 30.

Tap the number that is 10 less than 70.

Tap the tick that shows the number just before 100: 99.

Practice 3 — Slider questions

Move each slider to the correct number. Say the numbers out loud as you slide.

Move the slider to show a number that is one more than 29.

Current: 0

Move the slider to 47.

Current: 0

Move the slider to 99. That is just one less than 100.

Current: 0

Move the slider to the number that is one less than 50.

Current: 0

Move the slider to 80. Count 10, 20, 30, … as you slide.

Current: 0

Move the slider to 5. Start at 0 and count up by ones.

Current: 0

Move the slider to 64. It has 6 tens and 4 ones.

Current: 0

Quick Check — Counting to 100

Answer each question about counting, tens, and ones.

1) Counting by tens from 10 goes…

Counting by tens means adding 10 each time: 10, 20, 30, 40…

2) 47 has…

The tens digit is 4 and the ones digit is 7.

3) The number just before 100 is…

99 is one less than 100.

4) What comes after 34 when you count by ones?

Counting by ones means the next number is 34 + 1 = 35.

5) Ten ones make…

10 ones = 1 ten.

6) 30 is…

30 = 3 tens and 0 ones.

7) What comes after 60 when you count by tens?

60, 70, 80… when counting by tens.

8) Which number shows 6 tens and 4 ones?

6 tens is 60 and 4 ones is 4, so 60 + 4 = 64.

9) What is one more than 29?

One more means +1: 29 + 1 = 30.

10) What is one less than 50?

One less means −1: 50 − 1 = 49.

11) Which list is counting by tens?

Counting by tens adds 10 each time: 0, 10, 20, 30…

12) What number comes after 39?

39 + 1 = 40.

13) What is 10 more than 30?

10 more means +10: 30 + 10 = 40.

14) What is 10 less than 70?

10 less means −10: 70 − 10 = 60.

15) On a number line, counting forward usually moves…

Forward (bigger numbers) goes to the right.
