Mini Lesson

AI is a powerful planning partner. It can brainstorm fast, suggest an outline in seconds, and remind you of details you might miss. But the plan is not finished until YOU pick what fits, fix what does not, and write the parts that only you can write. Use AI to start — and yourself to decide.

The Planning Loop

Strong writers do not plan in one straight line. They go in a loop: brainstorm, outline, edit, refine — and circle back as new ideas show up. AI fits naturally into every step of that loop, but you stay in charge of every choice.

  1. Brainstorm — ask AI for ideas, angles, and questions to consider.
  2. Outline — ask AI to suggest a structure: 3 main points with 2 details each.
  3. Edit — rearrange sections, cut weak ideas, add ones AI missed.
  4. Refine — verify facts, adjust the tone, and make the outline yours.

AI's Job vs Your Job

AI is great at fast, generic suggestions. You are great at choosing, judging, and adding the personal voice that makes the work yours. Knowing the split keeps the work honest.

  • AI suggests possible topics and angles — you decide which one excites you.
  • AI drafts a starter outline — you pick the points that match your purpose.
  • AI lists possible details — you verify the facts before you trust them.
  • AI mirrors common structures — you rearrange them for your audience.
  • AI offers transitions and headings — you keep the ones that sound like you.

Outline Frame: Topic, 3 Main Points, 2 Details Each

A simple outline is enough for most Grade 5 writing. State the topic, list three main points, and add two details under each one. Three plus six equals nine clear ideas — plenty to write a strong piece.

  • Topic — the one big idea your piece is about.
  • Main Point 1 — first reason, scene, or section. (Two details support it.)
  • Main Point 2 — second reason, scene, or section. (Two details support it.)
  • Main Point 3 — third reason, scene, or section. (Two details support it.)
