Mini Lesson
Computers store thousands of files. Without a system, finding the right one feels like looking for a single sock in a giant laundry pile. Folders, descriptive names, and cloud sync turn that pile into a tidy library you can search in seconds.
Folders Build a Hierarchy
A hierarchy is a top-to-bottom tree. The Root holds big topic folders, each topic folder holds smaller folders, and the deepest folders hold your actual files. Two or three levels is usually plenty.
- Start with broad topics: Lessons, Personal, Family.
- Inside each, add subjects: English, Math, Photos, Music.
- Save individual files at the bottom — never directly on the Desktop.
Filenames That Help Future You
- Use words, not numbers: "rainforest-essay" beats "untitled-1".
- Add a date when versions matter: "2026-04-book-report".
- Stay consistent — pick one style (dashes or underscores) and keep it.
- Skip the chaos of "final-final-v2-REAL" — version once, save once.
Cloud Sync and Backups
Cloud sync copies your files to a server on the internet. Edit a file on a laptop and the same file updates on your tablet a few seconds later. A backup is an extra copy stored somewhere safe — if your device breaks or is lost, your work is still recoverable.
Tip: name a file the way you would search for it later. "science-volcano-poster" finds itself; "untitled-3" hides forever.
