Grade 5 · Social Studies · Lesson 25

Community helpers & organizations

A community is the web of people, jobs, and organizations that help everyone live safely and well. COMMUNITY HELPERS are the people who do those jobs — firefighters, police officers, teachers, librarians, doctors, nurses, social workers, mail carriers, garbage collectors, and many more. Behind each helper is an ORGANIZATION that pays them, trains them, and gives them the tools to do the job. Today you will meet the helpers, the roles, and the three kinds of organizations that employ them: PUBLIC, PRIVATE, and NONPROFIT.
