Identify main ideas and themes

Strong readers see two layers in every passage. The MAIN IDEA is what the passage is mostly about — the one big point the author wants you to take away. The DETAILS are the specific facts, examples, and reasons the author uses to prove that big point. Beyond the main idea sits the THEME — the deeper life lesson the author wants you to understand.
