Build academic vocabulary lists

Grade 5 textbooks are full of academic words — words you rarely hear at home but that show up across science, social studies, math, and reading. Strong readers build a personal academic vocabulary list so these words become tools, not roadblocks. A well-kept list turns "hard words" into words you own.

What goes on each vocabulary card

• Word — write it carefully, spelled correctly.
• Part of speech — noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.
• Definition — in your own words, not copied from a dictionary.
• Example sentence — use the word so the meaning is clear.
• Where I saw it — book, page, or lesson so you can revisit the context.

The five-step word-collection routine

1. Notice — circle or jot any word in your textbook that you cannot explain.
2. Look up — check a kid-friendly dictionary or ask a grown-up.
3. Define — rewrite the meaning in your own words so you truly understand it.
4. Use — write a fresh sentence that shows the word in action.
5. Review — read your list aloud once a week to keep the words active.
