Mini Lesson

ChatGPT is an AI tool that can read large amounts of text and produce a shorter summary. This can save time when you are doing research. However, AI summaries are not always accurate — it is your job to check the information before using it.

How to Use ChatGPT for Research

  1. Collect your research from reliable sources (books, websites, encyclopaedias).
  2. Write a clear prompt — tell ChatGPT exactly what you need: the topic, the length, and the focus.
  3. Paste your notes or describe your topic in the prompt.
  4. Read the AI summary carefully and compare it to your original sources.
  5. Correct any errors and add any missing information before using the summary.

Writing a Good Prompt

  • A good prompt is specific: "Summarize the main causes of World War I in three bullet points."
  • A poor prompt is vague: "Tell me about the war."
  • Include the audience: "Explain this for a Grade 4 learner."
  • Include the format: "Write this as a short paragraph" or "List five key facts."

Checking AI Accuracy

  • AI can make mistakes — it may state incorrect dates, names, or facts.
  • Always cross-check important facts with at least one reliable source.
  • If something seems wrong or surprising, look it up before including it in your work.
  • Never copy an AI summary word-for-word — rewrite it in your own words.
