Mini Lesson

Every day, people make choices about what to buy or use. To make smart decisions, it helps to understand the difference between needs and wants. Knowing which is which allows you to plan your spending wisely.

Needs

  • Needs are things that are essential for survival and basic wellbeing.
  • Without meeting your needs, your health or safety is at risk.
  • The main categories of needs are: food, water, shelter, clothing, and healthcare.
  • Examples: a healthy meal, clean drinking water, a warm place to sleep, basic clothing to stay warm, medicine when sick.

Wants

  • Wants are things that improve quality of life but are not essential for survival.
  • You can live without your wants, though life might feel less enjoyable.
  • Wants are often things that are nice to have but not necessary.
  • Examples: a new video game console, designer clothes, a holiday abroad, the latest smartphone.

How to Make Smart Decisions

  • Always take care of your needs first before spending on wants.
  • Ask yourself: "Do I need this, or do I just want it?"
  • If you want something but cannot afford it right now, make a savings plan.
  • Think about the long-term value: will this purchase still matter in a month or a year?
  • Being able to delay getting a want shows good self-control and financial discipline.

Tip: A quick test for needs vs wants — ask "Would I be in danger or very unwell without this?" If yes, it is a need. If no, it is a want. Always cover your needs before buying wants.
