Mini Lesson
Thousands of years ago, some of the greatest civilizations in history developed in different parts of the world. Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, and Ancient Greece each made lasting contributions to art, science, politics, and technology that still influence our lives today.
Ancient Egypt
- Location: North Africa, along the Nile River.
- Time period: approximately 3100 BCE to 30 BCE — over 3,000 years of civilization.
- The Nile River flooded every year, leaving rich soil that allowed Egyptian farmers to grow wheat and barley.
- The ancient Egyptians built massive pyramids as tombs for their pharaohs (rulers). The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
- They developed hieroglyphics — a writing system using pictures and symbols.
- They created one of the earliest calendars, with 365 days in a year.
- Mummification was used to preserve the bodies of important people after death.
Ancient China
- Location: East Asia, along the Yellow River and Yangtze River.
- Time period: dynasties stretching from approximately 2100 BCE onward.
- The ancient Chinese invented paper, which transformed the storage and sharing of knowledge.
- They also invented silk — a fine fabric produced by silkworms and traded across the world along the Silk Road.
- The Great Wall of China was built over many centuries to protect against invasions from the north.
- Ancient China developed printing with movable type, gunpowder, and the compass — four great inventions that changed the world.
Ancient Greece
- Location: Southern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, with many islands in the Aegean Sea.
- Time period: approximately 800 BCE to 146 BCE (Classical period).
- Ancient Greece is known as the birthplace of democracy — a system of government where citizens vote on decisions.
- Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle asked deep questions about knowledge, ethics, and the natural world.
- The Olympic Games began in Ancient Greece around 776 BCE as a religious festival and athletic competition.
- Greek architecture, mythology, theater, and mathematics heavily influenced modern Western civilization.
Tip: Use a simple memory trick — E.C.G. (Egypt, China, Greece). Egypt = pyramids and writing; China = paper and the Great Wall; Greece = democracy and the Olympics.
