Mini Lesson
Inclusive language is language that makes everyone feel welcome, respected, and part of the group. The words we choose can either include people or make them feel left out. Learning to speak inclusively is a key social skill that helps build positive, respectful communities.
Why Language Matters
- Words have power — they can make people feel safe and valued or excluded and hurt.
- Inclusive language sends a message: "You belong here and you matter."
- Exclusive language, even unintentionally, can make people feel like outsiders.
- Changing our language is often a simple action that has a big impact on others.
Inclusive vs Exclusive Language Examples
- Inclusive: "Everyone is welcome to join our game."
- Exclusive: "This is only for our group — you can't come."
- Inclusive: "Would anyone like to share their idea?"
- Exclusive: "We don't want to hear from you."
- Inclusive: "Let's make sure everyone has a chance to speak."
- Exclusive: "You wouldn't understand, it's not for people like you."
Habits for Inclusive Communication
- Invite quieter people into conversations.
- Avoid group-specific language that excludes newcomers.
- Use "we" and "everyone" to create a sense of belonging.
- Correct yourself when you notice exclusive language you have used.
- Speak up kindly when you hear exclusive language used by others.
Tip: A simple word swap can make a big difference. Instead of "you guys" (which may exclude some), try "everyone" or "you all". Small changes in language create more welcoming spaces.
