Mini Lesson

Setting a goal is only the first step — the real work is in tracking your progress along the way. When you break a goal into steps and regularly check in on how you are doing, you stay motivated, spot problems early, and celebrate how far you have come.

Why Tracking Progress Matters

  • It helps you see how far you have already come, not just how far you still have to go.
  • It keeps you accountable — you are more likely to take action if you track it.
  • It helps you notice when something is not working so you can adjust your plan.
  • Seeing progress, even small steps, builds confidence and momentum.

Breaking a Goal Into Steps

  • A big goal can feel overwhelming if you look at it all at once.
  • Break it into smaller, manageable steps — each one is a mini-goal.
  • Example: Goal = read one chapter book per week. Steps = read 5 pages in the morning, 5 pages before bed.
  • Completing each step gives you a sense of achievement that keeps you going.

What Is a Check-In?

  • A check-in is a pause in your journey where you review your progress.
  • Ask yourself: Am I on track? What is going well? What do I need to change?
  • Check-ins can be daily, weekly, or at the end of each step.
  • They prevent you from drifting far from your goal without realizing it.

Celebrating Small Wins

  • A small win is any positive step forward, no matter how tiny.
  • Celebrating small wins releases positive emotions that motivate you to keep going.
  • You do not need to wait until the final goal to feel proud — feel proud at every step.
