Mini Lesson
Life today looks very different from how people lived 100 or 200 years ago. The same basic tasks — communicating, traveling, farming, learning — are still part of life, but the ways people do them have changed dramatically.
Communication: then vs now
- Past: People sent handwritten letters that took days or weeks to arrive. News was shared by town criers shouting in the street.
- Now: People send messages instantly by phone or email. Video calls let you speak face-to-face across the world in seconds.
Travel: then vs now
- Past: Most people traveled by horse, wagon, or on foot. A journey of 100 miles could take several days.
- Now: Cars, trains, and airplanes carry people hundreds or thousands of miles in hours.
Farming and food: then vs now
- Past: Farmers plowed fields using horses or oxen. Food was grown locally and preserved by drying, salting, or pickling.
- Now: Large tractors and machines do most of the heavy farm work. Refrigerators keep food fresh for weeks.
Learning: then vs now
- Past: Many children learned at home or in one-room schoolhouses. Books were expensive and rare.
- Now: Children attend schools with many rooms and subjects. Books and information are available to almost everyone.

Vocabulary
Past
A time that has already happened — years or centuries agoe.g. In the past, people wrote letters by hand.
Present
The time happening right now — todaye.g. In the present, we send messages instantly.
Change
Something becoming different over timee.g. Technology caused a big change in how people travel.
Invention
A new tool or machine created to do something in a new waye.g. The tractor was an invention that changed farming.
Communication
Sharing information or messages with other peoplee.g. Email is a fast way of communication.
Technology
Tools and machines people build to solve problems and make tasks easiere.g. Modern technology helps doctors treat illness.
Modern
Belonging to the present time — today or recent yearse.g. A modern refrigerator keeps food fresh for weeks.
Historical
Belonging to the past, or about events and people from the paste.g. A one-room school is a historical example of learning.
