Mini Lesson
Exercise is any physical activity that makes your body work harder than usual. Regular exercise keeps our bodies strong and healthy. It strengthens the heart and lungs, builds muscles and bones, improves balance and flexibility, and helps us sleep and feel better.
Benefits of Regular Exercise
- Stronger heart and lungs — aerobic exercise (running, swimming, cycling) makes the heart pump more efficiently.
- Stronger muscles and bones — activities like jumping, climbing, and weight-bearing exercise build muscle and bone density.
- Better mental health — exercise releases chemicals in the brain that reduce stress, improve mood, and sharpen concentration.
- Healthy weight — burning energy through exercise, combined with a balanced diet, helps maintain a healthy body weight.
- Better sleep — people who exercise regularly fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.
Healthy Exercise Habits
- Aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.
- Warm up before exercising — walk, jog slowly, or do light stretches for 5 minutes.
- Cool down after exercising — stretch gently to prevent sore muscles.
- Drink water before, during, and after exercise to stay hydrated.
- Get 8-10 hours of sleep each night — the body repairs and grows during sleep.
- Eat a balanced meal before exercise for energy; avoid heavy meals right before activity.
- Play outside every day — this naturally increases physical activity.
Unhealthy Habits to Avoid
- Sitting all day without movement — too much screen time and inactivity weakens muscles and slows metabolism.
- Skipping breakfast — skipping meals leaves the body without fuel and reduces concentration.
- Staying up very late — lack of sleep weakens the immune system and reduces energy.
- Never drinking water — dehydration reduces performance, causes headaches, and can be dangerous.
- Eating candy for every meal — a diet high in sugar provides empty calories without nutrients.
You do not need a gym to exercise! Playing outside, dancing, skipping, cycling, and walking the dog all count as great physical activity.
