Mini Lesson

The science laboratory is an exciting place for experiments, but it also contains equipment and chemicals that can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Following safety rules protects you and the people around you from accidents and injuries.

Safe Lab Behaviors

  • Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from splashes or particles.
  • Wear a lab coat or apron to protect your clothing and skin.
  • Listen carefully to your grown-up's instructions before starting.
  • Keep your workspace clean and tidy to avoid spills.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap after every experiment.
  • Handle glassware and sharp tools carefully to avoid cuts.
  • Point test tubes away from people when heating substances.

Unsafe Lab Behaviors to Avoid

  • Never taste or smell any chemical or substance directly.
  • Do not run or play near chemicals, glassware, or open flames.
  • Never point tools, syringes, or test tubes at other people.
  • Do not touch your face during experiments.
  • Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so.
