Mini Lesson
A species is endangered when its population has fallen so low that it is at risk of becoming extinct — disappearing from Earth forever. Many animals and plants are endangered today because of human actions.
Why Species Become Endangered
- Habitat loss: forests, wetlands, and grasslands are destroyed for farming and building.
- Hunting and poaching: animals are illegally killed for their fur, ivory, or as trophies.
- Pollution: toxic chemicals in water and soil harm wildlife.
- Climate change: rising temperatures alter habitats faster than species can adapt.
How We Can Protect Endangered Species
- Creating wildlife sanctuaries provides safe habitats for endangered animals.
- Banning illegal hunting (poaching) reduces the killing of vulnerable animals.
- Breeding programs in zoos help increase population numbers.
- Restoring natural habitats gives species space to recover.
- Reducing plastic pollution protects marine creatures and water habitats.
