Learning Objectives
- 1Measure objects using standard units of length and mass
- 2Record and compare measurements in a table
Mini Lesson
Measurement means finding the size of something using a standard unit. We measure length in millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), or kilometers (km). We measure mass in grams (g) or kilograms (kg). We measure capacity in milliliters (mL) or liters (L).
Measurement Units
- Length: 10 mm = 1 cm, 100 cm = 1 m, 1,000 m = 1 km.
- Mass: 1,000 g = 1 kg. Use a balance or kitchen scales.
- Capacity: 1,000 mL = 1 L. Use a measuring jug.
- Area: length x width (in square units, e.g. cm squared).
- Perimeter: add all the sides together.
Choosing the Right Tool
- Ruler: best for measuring objects up to 30 cm.
- Tape measure: best for longer objects or curved surfaces.
- Kitchen scales: for measuring mass of food items.
- Measuring jug: for measuring liquids.
Always estimate first, then measure. This builds your "measuring sense"! Compare your estimate to the real measurement.
