Knowing your multiplication and division facts by heart saves time in every area of math. When you can recall that 6 × 7 = 42 instantly, you free your mind to focus on harder problems.

Multiplication Facts (Tables 2–9)

  • A multiplication fact is a pair of numbers combined with the × symbol to give a product.
  • Practice the facts in order first, then mix them up for a greater challenge.
  • Key products to memorize: 6×7=42, 7×8=56, 8×9=72, 6×9=54.

Division Facts

  • Every multiplication fact has two matching division facts.
  • Because 6 × 7 = 42, we know 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
  • If you know your times tables, you already know your division facts!

Using Known Facts to Find New Ones

  • Double a fact: if 3 × 6 = 18, then 6 × 6 = 36 (doubled).
  • Shift a fact: if 5 × 7 = 35, then 6 × 7 = 35 + 7 = 42.
  • These strategies help when a fact slips your memory.
