Mini Lesson
Division means splitting a total into equal parts. There are two ways to think about division: equal sharing (sharing a total among a fixed number of people or containers) and equal grouping (making groups of a fixed size from a total).
Equal Sharing
- You know the total and the number of groups (people, boxes, etc.).
- You share the total equally and find out how many are in each group.
- Example: 12 apples shared among 4 friends — each friend gets 12 ÷ 4 = 3 apples.
Equal Grouping
- You know the total and the size of each group.
- You make groups of that size and count how many groups you can form.
- Example: 15 pencils put into groups of 3 — you get 15 ÷ 3 = 5 groups.
Writing a Division Equation
- Use the ÷ symbol: total ÷ number of groups (or group size) = answer.
- The answer tells you "how many in each group" (sharing) or "how many groups" (grouping).
- Both types of division use the same equation structure.

Ask yourself: "Do I know the number of groups, or the size of each group?" That tells you which type of division it is.

Division
Splitting a number into equal groupse.g. 15 ÷ 3 means split 15 into 3 equal groups.
Dividend
The number being dividede.g. In 15 ÷ 3, the dividend is 15.
Divisor
The number you divide bye.g. In 15 ÷ 3, the divisor is 3.
Quotient
The answer to a division probleme.g. The quotient of 15 ÷ 3 is 5.
Equal groups
Groups that all have the same number of itemse.g. 15 cookies in 3 equal groups makes 5 in each.
Share
To split something so everyone gets the same amounte.g. I share 12 candies with 4 friends — 3 each.
