Mini Lesson
Every 4-digit number has four place values: thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. The position of a digit tells you its value. The digit 3 in 3,574 is in the thousands place, so its value is 3,000 — not just 3.
The Four Place Values
- Thousands (Th): the leftmost digit in a 4-digit number. Its value is the digit × 1,000.
- Hundreds (H): the second digit from the left. Its value is the digit × 100.
- Tens (T): the third digit from the left. Its value is the digit × 10.
- Ones (O): the rightmost digit. Its value is the digit × 1.
Digit vs Value
- The digit is just the symbol (0–9) sitting in that position.
- The value is what that digit is worth based on its position.
- In 3,574: digit 3 has value 3,000; digit 5 has value 500; digit 7 has value 70; digit 4 has value 4.
Remember: the digit tells you HOW MANY; the place tells you HOW MUCH each one is worth.
