Add Images and Text to a Digital Project

A picture really is worth a thousand words — when you combine images and text in a digital project, readers understand your ideas faster and remember them better. Learning to do this well is an important digital skill.

Types of images

• Photos: real photographs taken with a camera — clear and realistic.
• Drawings / digital art: made with a drawing app — great for illustrating ideas.
• Clipart: ready-made simple images that come with many apps.
• Always use your own images or images clearly labeled as free to use — images found online often belong to someone else.

Inserting and resizing an image

• Open the Insert menu (or tap the camera / image icon) and choose your image from the device.
• To resize, drag from a corner handle — this keeps the proportions correct so the image does not look stretched.
• Place the image near the text it relates to — not across the page from it.

Writing a good caption

• A caption is a short sentence placed directly below an image.
• It tells the reader what the image shows and why it is there.
• Example: "A monarch butterfly resting on a flower in the garden."

Alt text

• Alt text (alternative text) is a short written description attached to a digital image.
• It helps people who cannot see the image — and screen readers — understand what it shows.
• Write alt text as if you are describing the image to someone with their eyes closed.
