Ask a Trusted Adult Before Going Online

The internet is an amazing place full of learning, creativity, and fun. But just like you would not walk into an unfamiliar building alone without telling an adult, you should not go online without letting a trusted adult know. Four simple steps make all the difference!

Step 1 — ASK

• Before you open a browser or start an online activity, ask a trusted adult for permission.
• Tell them what you want to do: "Can I watch a video about dinosaurs?" or "Can I use the reading app?"
• Being specific helps the adult make a good decision — and shows them you are being responsible.

Step 2 — WAIT

• Wait for their answer — do not go online before they have said yes.
• If the adult is busy, wait patiently for the right moment instead of sneaking online.
• Example: If a parent says "In a minute," you wait — you do not start anyway.

Step 3 — GET PERMISSION

• Only go online after a trusted adult has said yes.
• They may also set rules: "You can use it for 20 minutes" or "Stay on that website only."
• These rules are there to protect you — follow them every time.

Step 4 — USE SAFELY

• While online, follow all the safety rules you have learned: keep personal information private, stay on approved sites, and tell an adult if something feels wrong.
• When your time is up or you are finished, close the browser or app and let the adult know you are done.

Who is a trusted adult?

• A trusted adult is someone who cares for you and can be held responsible — a parent, guardian, grandparent, aunt, or uncle.
• Online "friends" or people you have only met on the internet are not trusted adults, even if they seem kind.
