Mini Lesson

Being online is a little like being in a big, busy public space — except you cannot always see who is there. That is why being a responsible digital citizen is just as important as being responsible in real life.

What is a digital citizen?

  • A digital citizen is someone who uses technology and the internet safely, kindly, and responsibly.
  • Your digital footprint is the trail of information you leave behind every time you go online.
  • Once something is posted online, it is very hard to fully remove it.

Responsible online behavior

  • Always ask a trusted adult before going to a new website or app.
  • Keep personal information private — never share your full name, address, birthday, phone number, or passwords with anyone online.
  • Tell a trusted adult right away if you see something that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Only talk to people online who you already know in real life.

Not responsible online

  • Sharing your home address, birthday, or daily routine with strangers.
  • Clicking on pop-ups, links, or prizes from people you do not know.
  • Agreeing to meet someone in person who you only know from online.
  • Sharing passwords — even with friends.
