Mini Lesson

Every animal has a favorite place to live — a place that gives it exactly what it needs to survive. That place is called its habitat.

Forest habitat

  • Forests are full of tall trees, shade, and fallen leaves.
  • They offer food like berries, nuts, and insects, plus shelter in tree hollows and undergrowth.
  • Animals: deer, owl, fox, woodpecker, squirrel, bear.

Pond habitat

  • Ponds are small, still bodies of fresh water with plants growing in and around them.
  • They provide water, water plants to eat, and muddy banks for shelter.
  • Animals: frog, duck, dragonfly, water snail, fish, heron.

Grassland habitat

  • Grasslands are wide, open areas covered in grass with few trees.
  • They offer plenty of grass to eat and space for running away from predators.
  • Animals: rabbit, hawk, mouse, butterfly, grasshopper, snake.
