Learn Plant Parts and Their Roles
How to use: Download the PDF to print the worksheet. Then use this page to repeat activities and check answers.
Learning Objectives
- 1Name the five main parts of a plant β root, stem, leaf, flower, and seed
- 2Describe the role each plant part plays
- 3Explain what photosynthesis means in simple words
Mini Lesson
Plants can't walk, talk, or eat at a table β but every single part of a plant has an important job that keeps it alive and growing!
Roots β the anchor and drinker
- Roots grow underground and hold the plant firmly in the soil.
- They soak up water and nutrients from the soil and send them up the plant.
- Example: Carrots and beets are roots we can eat.
Stem β the highway
- The stem supports the plant and holds it upright.
- It carries water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and flowers β like a straw.
Leaves β the food factory
- Leaves capture sunlight and use it β along with water and air β to make food for the plant.
- This process is called photosynthesis.
Flower and Seed
- The flower attracts insects that help the plant reproduce.
- The seed is made inside the flower; it can grow into a brand-new plant.
Ask yourself: Which part drinks water? Which part makes food? Which part makes new plants?
Guided Practice
Sketch the plant diagram from your paper worksheet and label each part. Then use the Tracing Pad to practice the science words from this lesson.
Tip: As you trace each word, say its job out loud β for example, "stem β carries water up."
Exercises
Match each plant part on the left to the job it does on the right.
1. What is the main job of a plant's roots?
2. Why does a plant need a stem?
3. Which plant part is the food factory?
4. What does a flower do for the plant?
5. What can a seed become?
6. What is photosynthesis?
7. Where do a plant's roots grow?
8. A carrot is an example of which plant part?
9. How does water travel from the roots to the leaves?
10. Why does a plant need ALL of its parts?
