Mini Lesson

Reading with a partner is called partner reading. It is one of the most powerful ways to improve your fluency and comprehension — because when you read with someone, you listen more carefully and understand more deeply.

How partner reading works

  • Reader A reads one sentence, one paragraph, or one page aloud while Reader B follows along silently.
  • Then Reader B reads the next section while Reader A follows along.
  • Keep switching until the whole passage is read.

The listener's job

  • Follow along with your eyes — track every word as your partner reads it.
  • If your partner gets stuck on a word, wait 3 seconds before helping.
  • When you do help, say the word kindly and quietly — never tease or make it a big deal.
  • After your partner finishes a section, tell them one thing they did well.

After reading together — shared comprehension

  • When you finish reading the whole passage, discuss it together.
  • Ask each other: "What was the main idea? What surprised you? What would you do if you were the character?"
  • You might each notice different things — and that is what makes partner reading so useful!

  • Take turns fairly — do not read ahead.
  • Be kind and patient — every reader needs a little help sometimes.
  • Stay focused — your partner is counting on you to follow along.
