Mini Lesson

Stories happen in order — one event leads to the next. A good reader tracks this sequence as they read, so they can retell the story and understand why things happen the way they do.

Sequence words are your guide

  • Authors use signal words to show us the order of events.
  • First / To begin — introduces the earliest event.
  • Next / Then / After that — shows what comes in the middle.
  • Finally / At last / Last — signals the final event.
  • Example: First, Sam found a map. Then she followed the path. Finally she found the treasure.

How to track sequence while reading

  • Number the events in your head (or on paper): 1st, 2nd, 3rd…
  • Look for time words: one morning, the next day, later, after, before.
  • Ask: "What had to happen before this could happen?"

Retelling in order

  • Use the four-word frame: First… Next… Then… Last…
  • Each chunk should be one key event — not every tiny detail.

Ask yourself: "Which event happened first? Which happened last? Could I retell the whole story in four sentences using First, Next, Then, Last?"

Vocabulary
Sequence
The order in which events happen in a storye.g. The sequence of a day: wake up, eat breakfast, go to the park.
Signal word
A word an author uses to show the order of eventse.g. first, next, then, finally.
Retell
To tell a story again in your own words, keeping events in the right ordere.g. First she found a map. Last she found the treasure.
Time word
A word or phrase that tells when something happense.g. one morning, the next day, later, before.
